A Private Island Escape on Peru’s Isla Suasi

Destinations, South America

If you’re looking to totally disconnect, then you’ve come to the right place! There’s something magical about Isla Suasi, a small ecolodge and private island retreat on Peru’s Lake Titicaca.

The ecolodge at Isla Suasi

Having just finished our Machu Picchu adventure, we looking for something a little bit quieter and Isla Suasi was the perfect setting. A part of the Casa Andina chain of hotels, Suasi is the only private island on Lake Titicaca.

To get here is a bit of a challenge, but it’s well worth it. The island is under two hours by boat from the town of Puno, or a three hour drive and short boat ride in a Zodiac. By the time we visited Suasi, we were feeling low on energy, and opted for the drive in order to avoid a 5:00 a.m. wake up.

The ecolodge runs entirely on solar energy. This is by far the greenest property I’ve ever stayed at! It gets chilly on the island and at night the fireplace in your room is lit by staff and hot-water bottles are placed in the beds. This was the perfect touch. If you find yourself short of breath while you’re here due to the high altitude, there’s even oxygen available at reception.

The food served at Isla Suasi is fresh and delicious. Lunch consists of a BBQ outside overlooking the lake. Dinner selections are made at this time and you’re served a mouth-watering three course meal in the main lodge later in the evening. Beer, wine and other soft drinks are available throughout the day.

Sunset is the perfect time for a hike around the island and the baby alpacas that live here are some of the cutest creatures I’ve ever seen!

The setting sun is mesmerizing and I couldn’t stop snapping photos. It’s very quiet here at night but you can sit in the main lodge and play boardgames, read a book, or catch up on sleep. It’s an ideal spot for some rest and relaxation.

Morning is the best time for a kayak around the island. Although it was a bit too chilly for a swim while we were here, the temperature was ideal for kayaking. Despite the short duration of our stay, a visit to Isla Suasi is the perfect change of scenery.
