The Best Places to be a Beach Bum This Winter

October 11, 2012

Asia, Australia, Caribbean, Destinations

For many people, especially Canadians, the arrival of fall means that it’s time to start planning a warm, tropical vacation. I hate the cold, so one of the first things I start thinking about come October is what hot destination I can get to next. I’m a beach loving girl, through and through. If you’re planning a holiday this winter, here are a few hot spots to head to:

Sydney, Australia
Sydney is hands down home to some of the best beaches and they’re easily accessible. In Sydney you get the best of both worlds – exciting city living (delicious food, great nightlife) plus the laid back beach bum lifestyle. Bondi is one of Australia’s most well known beaches, so popular in fact, the lifeguards of Bondi have their own tv show, Bondi Rescue.

World famous Bondi Beach

The city is also home to other popular beaches like Manly (one of my favourites!) and Coogee. If you have a couple hours, the walk from Bondi to Coogee is a perfect way to spend some time.

Koh Phangan, Thailand
Despite spending well over a week on Koh Phangan, I never had any desire to go to the famed Full Moon party. The island is home to some jaw dropping secluded beaches. Some of these beaches don’t have any road access, so a boat ride or a grueling hike through the jungle are the only way you’re going to get there! Days quickly passed enjoying Thai food and fresh fruit shakes on the beach, swimming in the ocean and crashing at the end of a long day in my tiny bamboo hut. If you’re looking for total seclusion head to Bottle Beach – you won’t be disappointed!

Koh Pangan

Mui Ne, Vietnam
Mui Ne is a small resort town on the southeastern coast of Vietnam. If you want fresh seafood then you’ve come to the right spot! I can still taste the freshly cooked lobster I had while lounging on the beach in Vietnam. If you’re looking to catch some good waves, then this is the spot for you. Kiteboarding, windsurfing and surfing are all popular activities in the area. If you can tear yourself away from the beach, the White Sand Dunes are well worth a visit. We rented crazy carpets from some local kids and entertained ourselves for hours sliding down the massive dunes.

Mui Ne Beach

Grenada, West Indies
Grenada’s Grand Anse Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the entire Caribbean. This two-mile stretch of powder white sand is perfect for a morning stroll. The beaches on this tiny Eastern Caribbean island are public, which is something I love. With a population of just over 100,000, there’s plenty of space on this beach for everyone!

Grand Anse Beach

These are just a few of the places I’ve loved. When the weather gets chilly, where do you like to go?

If you want to relax and get away from city life, some of the best beaches on Australia’s east coast are in Northern New South Wales and Queensland 🙂

Thanks for the suggestions! I had a chance to explore part of the east coast while I was there and it was amazing. There’s so much I have left to see in Australia. A return trip is definitely required!

Got to give the Algarve a shout. It isn’t always warm in the depths of Winter, but it’s always beautiful.

I’ve been to the first three and they are definitely amazing, the Coromandel in New Zealand is incredible in winter as is the Dominican Republic 🙂

Thanks for liking my blog! I, too, hate the cold weather so, as much as I love Ireland, I’ll be returning to my home in South Florida for the winter months and will enjoy the warmer weather.

Great pics of Australia and Grenada…that Grenada one looks like paradise. I’m chilling out in the Galapagos these days, which is very beach-y (added benefit of sea lions swimming with you).
